Senate Bill 212 was Signed into Law
on July 21, 1997 Acupuncturists in the Definition of "Physician" for
Workers' Compensation Medical Benefits

On Monday, July 21, 1997, Senate Bill 212 was signed into law. SB 212 will indefinitely include acupuncturists in the definition of “physician? for purposes of treating injured employees entitled to workers?compensation medical benefits.

Almost a decade ago, acupuncturists were added to the physician definition for workers?compensation cases. At that time, a sunset provision was established to evaluate its effectiveness by January 1, 1999. SB 212 will repeal the sunset date.

SB 212 will ensure that patients have the freedom to choose treatment from a healthcare provider that is most appropriate to their needs. Acupuncture has proven to be an effective treatment and a valuable means of getting patients back into the work force.

As a multi-cultural state, California has a particular need to provide its residents with a wide range of treatment options. As long as appropriately trained and licensed health professionals, such as acupuncturists, are providing sage and effective treatments, the State should permit patients to choose their preferred healthcare providers. SB 212 provides that choice.
